An American director, film and television writer, and producer, born in Atlanta, Georgia. He studied at the Florida State University School of Theatre and then at the University of Georgia. He is best known for writing the film American Beauty, for which he won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay in 2000. He gained fame in television by writing the dark drama series Six Feet Under and the fantasy mystery series True Blood.
