German director, writer, and producer born on 14 March 1941 in Emden, Germany. He studied at the The German Film and Television Academy Berlin (DFFB) in Berlin. He is a two-time Academy Award nominee. His works include Das Boot, Enemy Mine, Outbreak, and Air Force One.
