An American actor, born in New York City, on February 18, 1890. He got married three times: Harriet Marshall (1916-1827), with whom he had three children, and they divorced, Olive Emerson (1929-1949) and they divorced, and Cleo Arnold (1951-1956) and remained with her until his death. He was born to German immigrant parents. He worked as a butcher, charcoal salesman, and service rep before appearing on stage for the first time in "A Midsummer Night's Dream" at the age of seventeen on the New York stage. He became a film actor in 1916 in silent cinema, and he continued to present his works until the emergence of talking cinema, so he completed his career with Universal and Paramount companies. He also headed the Film Actors Syndicate in 1956. Among his most important works: You Can't It With You (1938), Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939), and Meet John Doe (1941). He died on April 26, 1956 in Encino, California, USA.
