German director and producer born on 11 April 1949 in Neuburg an der Donau, Bavaria, Germany. He studied at the University of Television and Film Munich. He founded the German production company Constantin Film. His works include Downfall (2004), The Baader Meinhof Complex (2008), Perfume: The Story of a Murderer (2006), and The Name of the Rose (1986). He died of heart failure on 24 January 2011 in Los Angeles, California, US.
