He was an Austrian-born American director, born on April 29, 1907, in Austria, Hungary. He studied for one year at the Ecole Technique de Photographie et Cinématographie in Paris, after which he moved to Hollywood in 1929. He is known for High Noon (1952), From Here to Eternity (1953), and A Man For All Seasons (1966). He has won several awards such as Academy Awards and Golden Globe Awards for many of his works, including That Mothers Might Live (1938), The Search (1948), and From Here to Eternity (1953). He wrote My Life in the Movies: An Autobiography (1992). He died on March 14, 1997, in London.
