She was born in Beverly Hills, on May 9, 1946. Her father was of Swedish origin and her mother, of German and English descent, was a former actress. She studied at West Lake School for Girls in Los Angeles and she studied art at the University of Pennsylvania. However, she did not succeed in graduating from it. She was passionate about studying drawing and photography, and studied drama at HB Greenwich Studio. She appeared on screen in the mid-1960s, but in the 1970s she gradually changed her way in front of the camera and out in life. Candice married the director, writer, and producer Louis Malle (1980-1995). With whom she had a daughter, and after his death in 2000 she married Marshall Rose. She won a Golden Globe Award in 1989 and 1992, an Emmy Award (5 times), a Golden Apple Award in 1989, an ACA Award in 1992, an UFTA Award in 2008, and a Woman of the Year award in 1979. Among her most important works: Miss Congeniality (2000), Soldier Blue (1970), Live For Life (1967) and Murphy Brown (1988-1998).
