Lily Tomlin is an American actress, comedian, writer and producer. She was born on September 1, 1939, in Detroit Michigan. Her family moved to Paducah, Kentucky, during the Great Depression. Tomlin graduated from high school in 1957, then enrolled at Wayne State University, back in Detroit. She started as a stand-up comedian in Detroit and New York City, before getting television roles playing idiosyncratic, comedic characters like Ernestine, a snappy telephone operator on “Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In” in 1967. Tomlin made her mark on the silver screen as well. Some of her notable films include “Nashville” (1975), “Nine to Five ” (1980), “All of Me” (1984), “The Beverly Hillbillies” (1993), “Orange County” (2002) and “I Heart Huckabees” (2004). Tomlin played Ms. Frizzle on “The Magic School Bus,” based on the beloved children’s book series; Deborah Fiderer on “The West Wing,” and one half of a middle-aged singing duo with Meryl Streep in “A Prairie Home Companion” (2006). Tomlin has won one Oscar (for “Nashville”), four Primetime Emmy Awards, a Tony Award for one-woman Broadway play “The Search For Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe,” written by her long-time life partner, Jane Wagner, a Grammy for her comedy album “This Is A Recording,” and the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor in 2003, just to name a few. Though she never hid her sexuality, Tomlin officially came out to the media in 2001.
