An Italian director and writer, born in Naples, Italy. He studied at the Piccolo Teatro in Milan, Italy. In 1972, he founded the Teatro dell'Elfo in Milan, where he directed several plays until 1989. His film Mediterraneo (1991) won an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. He was a member of the jury at the 67th Venice International Film Festival in 2010. Among his credits are Nirvana (1997) and The Invisible Boy (2014).
