In 1970, he continued to trounce those he faced in the Candidates Tournament, which qualified him to compete against the world champion Boris Spassky. Fischer became number one in the world in the International Chess Federation classification and remained at the top of the classification for fifty-four months. In 1972, he won the World Championship by defeating Spassky in the match held in Reykjavik, Iceland. The movie Pawn Sacrifice documented the epic competition between the players.
