An American actor, born in Kenosha, Wisconsin, on May 31, 1908. Ameche was born in Wisconsin to an Italian immigrant father and a mother of Scottish and German descent. He attended the University of Wisconsin. His earliest films were Dante's Inferno (1935), Sins of Man (1936), and Ramona (1936). He continued to appear in successful films in the 1940s, such as Heaven Can Wait (1943). In the following three decades, he only appeared in a few films, focusing more on television and stage roles, then returned to the silver screen in the 1983 film Trading Places. He won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in 1986 for his role in the movie Cocoon (1985). He also won the Best Actor Award at the Venice Film Festival for the movie Things Change (1988). Don Ameche died in Scottsdale, Arizona, on December 6, 1993 of prostate cancer.
