A Puerto Rican actor, born in Santurce, Puerto Rico, as José Vicente Ferrer de Otero y Cintrón. José Ferrer had five marriages: actress Uta Hagen (1938-1948),...Read more with whom he had a child, and the marriage ended in divorce; actress Phyllis Hill (1948-1953), but the marriage ended in divorce; actress and writer Rosemary Clooney (1953-1962), with whom he had 5 children, and the marriage ended in divorce; then he returned to the mother of his children, Rosemary Clooney (1964-1967), and the marriage ended in divorce again; and finally Stella Daphne Magee (1977-1992), with whom he remained until he died. Among his most important works are Cyrano de Bergerac (1950), The Caine Mutiny (1954), Lawrence of Arabia (1962), and Dune (1984). José graduated from Princeton University in New Jersey, where he practiced acting on the university stage, and immediately after his graduation, he worked on Broadway. He gained fame during the forties, and he did not appear on the cinema screen until the fifties. José Ferrer's most famous role was the role of Cyrano de Bergerac, which he performed on stage in 1946 and 1953. He presented it on the cinema screen in 1950 and won an Oscar for it. He also performed the same role on television in 1973, but as a voice performance. José won 2 Tony Awards for Best Actor in a Play and 3 for Best Director. He worked in theater, cinema, and television until his death on January 26, 1992, in Coral Gables, Florida, USA, from colon cancer.
