French film director, actor and producer, born on July 1, 1934 in Paris. His father was a fur seller. He has established himself since his second short film Le Poulet (The Chicken), which won an Oscar. He is known for Jean de Florette (1986), The Two of Us (1967) and Hunting and Gathering (2007). He was married to Sylvie Gautrelet and Anne-Marie Rassam. He died on January 12, 2009 of a stroke at the Hospital De La Salpetriere, Paris.
