A German director, writer, and producer, born on August 25, 1973, in Hamburg, Germany, to Turkish parents. While studying at Gymnasium Allee school, he wrote short stories and screenplays and made his first attempts to shoot with a Super 8 camera, becoming a member of an off-theater group at the Thalia Theater in Hamburg.
His directorial debut was in 1995. In 1993, Akin began working as a temporary worker on and off camera at the Wüste Filmproduktion for the Hamburg producers Stefan Schubert and Ralph Schwingel, and he increasingly worked as a writer, director, and actor. He attended the University of Fine Arts in Hamburg to study visual communication, graduating in 2000. Akin's collaboration with Schwingel initially resulted in two short films, Sensin - Du bist es! (1995) and Getürkt (1996).
Akin made his feature film debut in Short Sharp Shock (1998), followed by In July (2000). In 2004, Akin founded the film production company Corazón International with Andreas Thiel and Klaus Maeck. Fatih Akin's notable films include In the Fade (2017), Head-On (2004), and The Edge of Heaven (2007). In recognition of his film work, Akin received several national and international awards and nominations, and those he won include the Golden Berlin Bear and the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury at the Cannes Film Festival. He is married to the actress Monique Akin.
