A Scottish novelist, translator, and film critic, born in Scotland, in the United Kingdom, and lived in Paris, France. He was also a prolific journalist. He wrote a column for The Sunday Times in the 1990s. He is famous for writing The Holy Innocents and The Dreamers, which was turned into a film of the same name, starring actress Eva Green.
