An American actor, born in Helena, Montana on May 7, 1901 as Frank James Cooper. His lawyer English father immigrated to the US, and settled in Montana, where he became a Montana Supreme Court justice. Gary attended Dunstable Grammar School in England, then Helena High School in...Read more Montana, after which he started his career in film, playing small roles in Westerns. He then appeared in bigger parts in The Winning of Barbara Worth (1926), and Wings (1927). Thereafter Cooper rose to stardom, appearing in successful movies until the early sixties. He received many awards throughout his career, including a Golden Globe for the movie High Noon (1952), and he also received five Academy Award nominations, winning two for Sergeant York (1941), and High Noon (1952), in addition to an Academy Honorary Award in 1961. He died on May 13, 1961 in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, California.
