Through her work on Broadway theaters, she made her way to cinema, where she performed many supporting roles. At the end of the fifties, she got a job as an artist-in-residence at the University of Denver, and she retired after several years until her death on September 3, 1980 in Cos Cob, Connecticut, USA. She was nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. She is known for Gone with the Wind (1939), All This, and Heaven Too (1940), and The Nun's Story (1959).
