American director, writer, actor, producer, born on August 25, 1917 in Elberon, New Jersey. He is the son of a Cuban surgeon. He attended middle school and Princeton University, became an editor at the small Vermont newspaper and wrote the children's book, "Tito's Hats." In 1938, he moved to the Musical Theater. He is known for Catherine the Great (1995), Sex and the Single Girl (1964), and War and Peace (1956).
