American actor, born in Chicago, Illinois, USA on February 14, 1894. He received an Emmy Award in 1958 and 1959 for The J.Benny Program (1950-1965). He married actress Mary Livingstone (1927-1974), with whom he got a child and remained with her till his death. Among his most important works: Broadway Melody of 1936 (1935), To Be or Not to Be (1942), and Hollywood Canteen (1944). He learned to play the violin at the age of six and mastered playing it until he became a brilliant musician. He finished school and joined the theater with his mother and brothers and then joined the radio to present his successful program, which soon turned into a successful television program. He worked in cinema in many films, but his success on radio and television was greater than cinema.
