An American actress who was born in San Antonio, Texas, on April 25, 1888. She received a BA in mathematics from the University of Texas in 1906 and worked as a teacher, then studied law to become the first lawyer in Texas in 1914. She joined the Pasadena Playhouse, and then met Alfred Hitchcock, who convinced her to play a role in the film Rebecca (1940). She is best known for her roles in: Portrait of Jennie (1948), On the Town (1949), and A letter to Three Wives (1949). Florence Bates died on January 31, 1954, in Burbank, California, of a heart attack.
