Isabel Sanford was born in New York City, New York, USA, on August 29, 1917, as Eloise Gwendolyn Sanford. At the age of 27, she joined the American Negro Theater, after which she joined Broadway theaters. In 1960, she moved to Los Angeles to work in film and on television, and in 1975, she participated in the television series The Jeffersons, which aired for 11 years, and for her role she won an Emmy Award for Best Actress in a comedy series, to be the first African American actress to win this award in 1981. Isabel Sanford passed away on July 9, 2004, in Los Angeles, California, of pneumonia and heart failure.
