An American actor born in Astoria, New York, on February 7, 1915. He was married to Anna Constance Nickerson (1939-2002) and had 5 children with her. At the age of nine, he performed in nightclubs, then in theatrical performance on Broadway. He became famous during the forties between cinema and radio, and in the mid-fifties he left the screen to devote himself to theatre and then television, to eventually return to Hollywood. He received two stars on the Walk of Fame for his work on radio and television. Among his notable works: The Miracle of Morgan's Creek (1944), Hail the Conquering Hero (1944), and National Lampoon's Vacation (1983). He died on November 14, 2002 in Montclair, New Jersey, USA, after having an operation.
