An American writer and actor, he was born in Brooklyn, New York, USA. He and his family relocated to California when he was thirteen years old, and he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. It was during a Japanese bombing strike that he lost his hearing. He attended  Santa Monica Junior College to study after the war. In college, he won a heavyweight boxing championship. He is known for Deliverance (1972), This Is Not a Test (1962), and The Other Side of Hell (1978).
