Through his acting career, he signed with several major production companies, such as Fox Films and MGM. He continued acting in the silent cinema until the arrival of the sound era. He was in a conflict as his voice did not match the image that he portrayed on the screen, but he still continued his work in cinema until he died. He is known for Anna Karenina (1927), Downstairs (1932), and Flesh and the Devil (1926). He was married to Olivia Burwell, Leatrice Joy, who he had a child with, Ina Claire, and Virginia Bruce, with whom he had another child with. He received a Star on the Walk of Fame in 1960. He passed away on January 9, 1936 in Los Angeles, California, USA of a heart attack.
