An American screenwriter, film critic, and journalist, born in New York State. He graduated from Kenyon College, and worked as a critic for Time, Newsweek, and Rolling Stone, before moving on to writing films. He worked with the writer Martin Scorsese in the movie The Age of Innocence in 1993. His works include Strange Days (1995) and Gangs of New York (2002). He was married to the actress Verna Bloom.
