An American actor who was born in San Francisco, California, USA on December 26, 1903. He married actress Mary Lou Cook (1929-1942), and after their divorce, he married Peggy McKenna (1943-1995) and she remained with him until he died on May 8, 1995 of a stroke in Big Pine, California, USA. He is known for The Maltese Falcon (1941), The Big Sleep (1946), and The Killing (1956). He studied at St. Albans College and the Chicago Academy of Dramatic Art. He made his first appearance on stage at the age of 14 and worked as an assistant director in theater at the age of 17. He worked in theatrical performance and on Broadway, and his first appearance in cinema was in the movie Her Unborn Child (1930). He did not devote himself to cinema until 1936 when he settled in Hollywood and became a major in many films, and he worked often on screen. He was enlisted in the army during the Second World War and continued to appear in cinema until the end of the eighties when he lost his speech due to a stroke.
