British actor born in Lancashire, United Kingdom on 12 February 1898. He began his career in vaudeville theater then due to his talent, he managed to build himself a career in Broadway. In the 1930s, he signed a deal with MGM and starred in several films at that time. His most notable works include Freaks (1932), Spellbound (1945), Harvey (1950), and A Patch of Blue (1965), which was his final film appearance. He was married to actress Martha Haworth until his death, and they had one child. He died of a heart attack on 11 June 1966 in Los Angeles, California.
