An American film director, screenwriter, and actor, born on August 7, 1911, in Galesville, Wisconsin, USA. Ray was of German and Norwegian descent. He studied drama at La Crosse State Teachers College, then studied at the University of Chicago for one year and left due to his poor grades. He is known for Rebel Without a Cause (1955), The American Friend (1977), and In a Lonely Place (1950). Nicholas Ray died on June 16, 1979, in New York City, New York, USA, at the age of 67, due to lung cancer.
