He studied dance and ballet and graduated from the Los Angeles College of Dramatic Arts. He danced at many theaters, after which he appeared on Broadway. He worked in cinema, and when he stopped dancing, he turned to television. He worked as an instructor at the American Laboratory Theatre in 1966, and taught movement for actors at Juilliard, and Yale University. James Mitchell was nominated for 7 Emmy Awards, and received a Theatre World Award. His most notable work includes Colorado Territory (1949), The Band Wagon (1953), and All My Children (1979-2010). He died in Los Angeles, California, on January 22, 2010.
