Biography

Egyptian composer and actor born in 1906 in El Sayeda Zeinab, Cairo. From a very young age, he used to sing at weddings and special occasions. He was discovered by musician Sayed Darwish who admired his voice and his ability to memorize songs, and hired him to help singers...Read more memorize songs at Ali El Kassar's theater troupe, where Darwish worked as a composer. He also acted in several of their productions. In 1927 he worked as a teacher at the Arab Music Institute, and was chosen as a member of a committee to compile an archive of folk music which paved the way to the formation of the Arab Music Orchestra in 1968. He composed the scores for several plays, films, and sketches. His works include Ringing of an Anklet, His Excellency Kechkech Bey, and The Beloved's Offspring. He died on 7 January 1980.
