An American director, actor, screenwriter, and producer, born on August 19, 1927 in Beaumont, Southeast Texas. At a young age, he lost his mother when she died after a car accident. He then studied law and Business and Journalism at the University of Texas from 1950 to 1951. He worked in stand-up comedy, briefly played professional baseball and football, and tried ranching in Nicaragua, before turning to acting. He began in minor character roles in several World War II films including The Young Lions (1958) and The Naked and the Dead (1958). He collaborated with director Sam Peckinpah in five films, including Ride the High Country (1962) and Major Dundee (1965). He directed A Boy and His Dog in 1975. He died on July 9, 2022 in Hollywood, California, USA.
