A British actor, born on October 9, 1923 in Plymouth, United Kingdom. He is best known for his many roles in Shakespeare's plays, in addition to his participation in more than 70 films and television works. He was knighted in 1979 for his distinguished contributions in the field of drama. Despite the fame he achieved through his theatrical works, audiences knew him for his role in the light comedy Never the Twain, and the police drama Judge John Deed. He made his cinematic debut in 1953 in the movie The Cruel Sea, which launched his long film career. He died on September 12, 2014 in Romney Marsh, New Romney, United Kingdom at the age of 90 after a long battle with prostate cancer.
