He graduated from Brighton College, trained as an actor in joint-stock theater companies, and worked as a singer for British forces during the First World War. After the war, he began acting on stage in 1918. In order to be a recognized actor, he studied Shakespeare's theater, and for several seasons was a member of the Sydney W. Carroll Troupe at Regents' Atmospheric Theatre. He presented British films in the early thirties, and he made a movie for the German cinema Black Roses (1936). He went to Hollywood in the late thirties, working in theatre, cinema and television until the early fifties. He worked in the Broadway theater before working in the cinema, and also worked in the radio field on CBS. Among his most important works: Joan of Arc, Cairo and Sherlock Holmes and the Secret Weapon. He died of a kidney disease in 1960 at the age of 67.
