American actor born in Illinois, US on 16 July 1918. Being the nephew of playwright Charles MacArthur, he naturally began his acting career on stage. He began acting in small theaters until he managed to appear on Broadway, Mercury Theatre and with Orson Welles. He made his film debut in 1943 with MGM on the film Pilot #5 (1943). Other major works of his include Adventures in Silverado (1948), Black Eagle (1948), The Texas Rangers (1951), and Wyoming Renegades (1955). His last film appearance was in The Oregon Trail (1959) and his last TV appearance was on Riverboat (1959). He married Shirley Mohr Bishop and she remained with him until he died of cancer on 3 October 1959 in Malibu, California.
