However he chose instead to study music at New York University. He trained in the opera, then worked in Broadway and opera theaters until 1935, when he signed a contract with MGM and made his first films, Reckless (1935). His most important works include: Everybody Sing (1938), A Night at the Opera (1935), Show Boat (1936) and Radio Days (1987). He died at the age 84 .
