He was born in New York, USA on February 25, 1906. He is acknowledged for Meet John Doe (1941), Bluebeard's Eighth Wife (1938), and The Lady and the Mob (1939). He was also known for playing police and gangster roles. He attended Yale University and appeared on Broadway before debuting his cinematic career, where he presented his first movie, Speakeasy (1929). He died because of a stomach ailment at the age of 42.
