A Spanish writer, actor, and director, born in Argentina. He is a member of the Royal Spanish Academy. His mother, the Spanish actress Carola Fernán Gomez, toured Latin America, and he later used her surname when they moved to Spain in 1924. After the Spanish Civil War, he began studying law but dropped out to work in the theater. He also participated in several films, but he continued to work in the theater, especially after he founded his own theater company. He also directed works adapted from his novels, and in 1977, he won the Silver Bear Award for Best Actor at the 27th Berlin International Film Festival for his role in the film El anacoreta.
