On February 19, 2008, 5 days before the end of his term of office, he announced that he did not wish for a new term as president or Chief of Staff. He passed away on November 26, 2016, at the age of 90. He appeared as himself in the American documentary The Fog of War: Eleven Lessons from the Life of Robert S. McNamara (2003).
