In 1965, Castro was the Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba who led the country's transformation into a communist regime and a one-party system of government. And in 1976, he became the head of the State Council and the Council of Ministers. He was the highest military commander. After intestinal surgery on July 31, 2006, he handed over his duties to his little brother and first vice president, Raul Castro. On February 19, 2008, 5 days before the end of his term of office, he announced that he did not wish for a new term as president or Chief of Staff. He passed away on November 26, 2016, at the age of 90. He appeared as himself in the American documentary The Fog of War: Eleven Lessons from the Life of Robert S. McNamara (2003).
