An Italian film and theater director and screenwriter, born in Bologna, Italy. During his law studies in Rome, he began working in theatre. In 1943, he joined the Italian Resistance and became a member of the Italian Communist Party. He earned recognition with his second feature film Violent summer. In 1962, Zurlini's film Family Portrait won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival. In 1965, his film The Camp Followers, won the Special Silver Prize at the 4th Moscow International Film Festival. He died in Verona on October 26, 1982.
