He was a member of the Oxford University Dramatic Society, then studied drama. He made his first appearance on the London Colston Theater in 1911. During the First World War, he served in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, and resumed his career after the war. He entered the world of cinema in 1930 and stayed in it for 40 years, specializing in elderly and religious figures. He made his first films, Escape 1930. He also appeared in 10 films with John Luzi, and had a respectable and cultured style in performing. He presented television works, most notably Oh, Brother (1968-1870) where he presented 19 episodes, and his last movie was Hostile Witness (1969). His most important works include: Ivanhoe (1952), Hamlet (1948), Separate Tables (1958) and Becket (1964). He died in a nursing home in 1979 at the age of 90.
