Scottish film director, critic, and television broadcaster, born to a working-class family on January 11, 1938, in Clydebank, Scotland. His family moved to England when he was nine years old. After school and national service in the Royal Air Force, he studied English at Oxford University. He worked as a director for the BBC in the 1960s. He began his career in 1967. He is known for The Crow Road (1996), Housewife, 49 (2006), and Dreamchild (1985). He died in the UK on April 20, 2022, from a brain tumor.
