He served as the first Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) of the United States in 1924 and was instrumental in founding the FBI in 1935, where he remained director for...Read more another 37 years until his death in 1972. He studied law and graduated from George Washington University in 1917, after which he joined the US Department of Justice. During his career in the FBI, Hoover managed to make it one of the most prominent law enforcement agencies in the world. He reformed the agency from some corruption and hired people based on their competence, creating the world's largest fingerprint registry, and setting up a forensic lab and training academy. He became famous in the 1930s, when the FBI was able to track down known criminals. During World War II and after the war, the FBI also managed to bring down many foreign spy networks. In 1975, Congressional investigators exposed Hoover's abuse of his power several times. He died on May 2, 1972 in Washington, D.C.
