He was a Catholic leader and was opposed by the Buddhists. Diem was assassinated along with his brother, Ngô Đình Nhu, on November 2, 1963, during a coup backed by the CIA after continuous Buddhist demonstrations broke out and were accompanied by non-violent resistance. He appeared as himself in works such as Hearts and Minds (1974).
