She was born to passionate amateur actors, she took lessons in reciting and dancing at an early age. She attended Streatham Hill High School, then St Michael's School. She moved with her parents to Heider Sfeld, where she learned stenography and typography. She went on to study secretarial at Pittman College. In 1944, she graduated from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) and worked in theater. At a time when radio was more popular than television, in the early 1950s she became a name in radio comedy. Among her most important works: Absolutely Fabulous (1992-2012), Carry On Abroad (1972) and Carry On Columbus (1992). She died in 2018 in a nursing home at the age of 93.
