He began his career as an actor in minor roles in the late 1940s, and he shifted into production, directing, and writing in the early 1950s. His first onscreen appearance was on the TV movie Anna Christie (1946) and the film Penny and the Pownall Case (1948). His notable works as a director include The Count of Monte Cristo (1956), The Avengers (1961), and The Bass Player and the Blonde (1978). He married 6 times and had 3 children. He died on 12 October 1983 in Wimbledon, London, England.
