Lyn was born in an artistic home, where his father, John Merton, had an extensive career in supporting roles in film and television. His brother, Bob LaVarre, was an actor, as well as his uncle and cousins. His most important works: Roll, Thunder, Roll! (1949), Zombies of the Stratosphere (1952), The Toughest Gun in Tombstone (1958) and The Invisible Monster (1950). He retired in Hawaii after his last film appearance, Journey to Shiloh in 1968. He limited his work to some television appearances, learned to play the guitar, and was living on his boat in Honolulu in 1973 when he suffered a brain haemorrhage and died at the age of 50.
