An American actor, born as Hugh Milburn Stone in Burton, Kansas, USA, on July 5, 1904. He was married three times and had one child. Stone won a Western Heritage Award in 1967 and 1972, an Emmy Award for Best Supporting Actor in 1968, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960 for his television work. Among his notable works are Gunsmoke (1955-1975), Mystery Plane (1939), The Gamblers (1949) and Sky Patrol (1939). He graduated from Burton High School, where he was active in the drama club, played basketball, and worked in touring theater troupes. He also worked in vaudeville, then had a minor appearance on Broadway, then moved to Los Angeles to try his luck in cinema. He played uncredited roles such as clerks, reporters and sailors, then moved on to influential supporting roles. He received an honorary doctorate upon his retirement in 1975 from Plains College, Kansas. He died of a heart attack in La Jolla, San Diego, California, USA, on June 12, 1980, at age 75.
