He was a World War I veteran, and before his work in cinema, he was a firefighter. He played roles such as the outlaw, the farm owner and the gambler. He was also known for playing the lawmen in Westerns. He died of pneumonia in Glendale, California, USA, on November 10, 1947, at age 57.
