She worked as a modern dance teacher of Estonian-Jewish heritage, and her father was a...Read more lieutenant colonel in the US Air Force. She became interested in various artistic pursuits and began writing and playing music. She attended the San Francisco Art Institute where she studied painting with the intention of becoming an art teacher. She had her first photography workshop in school. She was inspired by the work of Robert Frank and Henri Cartier-Bresson, which she learned in her school. She continued for several years to develop her photography skills. She directed an episode of Great Performances (1992).
