She played roles in television, film and theater. She was born to a family of Russian and Austrian Jewish origins. She graduated from New York University in 1948 after studying philosophy, and in 1949, she wrote a radio script that she sold to NBC and got the voice role. Her first television appearance was in 1950 on The Jack Benny Program. She starred in 3 plays on Broadway and 8 off-Broadway. She also appeared in many notable theatrical performances at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago in the mid-sixties and wrote many television and theater scripts. She made her last appearance on the TV series Law & Order (1991). She retired from acting and devoted herself to writing until her death in 2009 at the age of 82.
