An Italian opera singer, born in Bari, Italy on July 23, 1909. She received awards and honorary degrees from many colleges and universities and was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Her most notable works include Otello (1948), Serenade (1956), and Little Shop of Erotica (2001). She is best known for her portrayal of the heroines in the operas of Verdi and Puccini and was a leading artist in the Metropolitan Opera from 1940 to 1966. She passed away in Manhattan, New York City, New York, USA, on August 15, 2014, at the age of 105.
